It’s been a few busy days since our press release. Time to get back to work!
The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a new text messaging scam soliciting personal information that could destroy your credit.
According to a press release, the Better Business Bureau says several consumers have reported receiving text messages that say, "your credit union account is closed."
The message advices consumers to call the phone number 631-350-1611.
When the OptOutDetectives called the number tonight we received a message stating, "This is a message from the Federal Trade Commission. The telephone number you've just called has been disconnected because it may be involved in a scam. You might have gotten this phone number from an email, text or voice mail message, but no matter how real it seems that message was a trick."
- Do not respond to the text messages and never give out personal information to unknown solicitors.
- If you get an e-mail or text message that warns you, with little or no notice, that your account will be shut down unless you reconfirm your billing information, do not reply or click on a link in the email. Instead, contact the company referenced in the message using a telephone number or website address you know to be genuine.
- Avoid emailing personal and financial information.
- Review your credit card and bank account statements as soon as you receive them to determine whether there are any unauthorized charges. If your statement is late by more than a couple of days, call your credit card company or bank to confirm your billing address and account balances.
- If you have responded to this type of text message or if you believe your account information may have been compromised, contact your financial institution immediately using contact information from your billing statements. You may also wish to contact your local police department.
